Self sufficiency in the form of growing
Lack of food is a major issue for the home. Fresh running water is also an extra cost to the home, which they can ill afford. The home has land that could be cultivated for a vegetable garden and there is someone on the premises who could grow vegetables, but lack of water is a problem.
We are looking for a sponsor to put in an irrigation system to catch the rain water in tanks from the rooftop guttering. The water then can be used both for daily indoor use, and to grow the vegetables. Not only will this be of benefit to the children in terms of nourishment and nutrients, but they will also be able to develop an understanding about the growing cycles and the project will have an educational purpose as well
.
What we wish to do is to put two 1000 gallon tanks to the left hand side of the building, close to the existing barren vegetable garden. They will be 8 feet high above ground on a concrete frame. It would facilitate water being taken from the tank by the means of a tap for the home and also allowing the home to water the garden when required.
We have been given a quote of EC$16,000 which is UK £4,000 or US$5,950 for the 2 tanks on a concrete frame, changing all down pipes to divert the water and for the necessary septic tank cleaning, exploratory work and repairs. The estimated time of completion of this work would be 4 weeks.
